Material Description

Niobium is a grey-white metal with melting point of 2468℃, boiling point of 4,742 ℃, and density of 8.57g/cm3. Niobium is stable in air at room temperature, and cannot be fully oxidized in oxygen even when it’s hot and turns red; it can directly compound with sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon at high temperature, can form alloys with titanium, zirconium, hafnium, and tungsten. It has no chemical action with inorganic acids or alkali; it is not dissolved in aqua regia, but can be dissolved in hydrofluoric acid. Niobium has oxidation states of -1, + 2, + 3, +4 and +5, in which +5 compound is most stable.

Areas of Application

Because of high melting point, corrosion-resistance, cold-processing performance and other characteristics, niobium and niobium alloy bar and wire products are widely used in chemical, electronics, aviation and space fields. With a density of 16.57g/cm3, niobium and niobium alloy bars are used as structural materials for aero-engines and rocket nozzles, internal components and coating materials for reactors, and various corrosion-resistant parts for corrosion environment with nitric acid, hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. Adding zirconium into niobium can significantly improve the antioxidant properties and strength of materials; by this way, niobium and niobium zirconium alloy wires are widely used in production of high pressure sodium lamps and anode lead wires for electrolytic capacitor.
